Slavery, Antislavery, and the Underground Railroad
Thursday, February 19, 7 pm at the Beacon Sloop Club Clubhouse, Red Flynn Drive, Beacon, NY
The people of the Hudson Valley counties played unique and important roles in the history of American slavery and abolitionism. The region was a major center of enslavement in the North. It also played significant roles in the abolitionist movement and Underground Railroad. The Mid-Hudson ntislavery History Project (MHAHP) works to call attention to this neglected aspect of our past. Created in 2006, MHAHP brings together scholars, independent researchers, educators, civic leaders, and interested community members. Our goals are:
-
To conduct and synthesize research on the history of enslavement and antislavery in the Mid-Hudson Valley, with special emphasis on the Underground Railroad and the role of Black abolitionists and Freedom Seekers in the movement for liberty and justice
-
To interpret this history and share these interpretations with residents and visitors of all es in our area
-
To place this local history within the broad contexts of racial slavery in the New World, the African American experience and the legacies of slavery and antislavery today, including the impact of this historic freedom movement on subsequent struggles for racial and social justice
Founded by folk singer and activist, Pete Seeger, The Beacon Sloop Club is a 501-c3 volunteer organization dedicated to the preservation, protection and restoration of the Hudson River and surrounding waterways through advocacy, education and celebration.
As part of our mission, we provide free river access through free sails and sail training on the ferry sloop Woody Guthrie, a replica of the 18th and 19th century sloops that once plied the Hudson River.
The Beacon Sloop Club offers free seasonal music festivals to the people of the river, as well as other events, lectures and classes throughout the year.
Our monthly meetings are the first Friday of the month, starting with potlucks at 6:30 and ending with a Circle of Song. Everyone welcome!
